I hope by the time this reaches y'all, spring will be well on its way, wherever you may find yourself. I know those of you in the northern climes have frozen most of the winter, so enjoy the warmer weather. This month actually finds me with news to pass along.
College trustee and classmate David Shribman is now the executive editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, after most recently having spent time with The Boston Globe as their Washington, D.C., bureau chief. Congratulations, and keep your feet dry at the confluence of the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela.
Jack Brennan, Vanguard Group chief executive, has also been in the news along with Fidelity Investments chief executive Edward C. Johnson III, speaking out against a proposal before the SEC to require disclosure of proxy votes by mutual funds. Passage of such a measure would require funds to generate voluminous reports to show how they voted their proxies. Such a measure looks like it would only benefit the paper companies and add further expenses to the funds that are trying to minimize expenses and maximize returns.
The College passed along news that Jordan M. Young and his wife, Margaret Levine Young, have collaborated with others to create a number of the "For Dummies" books that are so helpful. They worked on The Internet For Windows Me ForDummies, Word Perfect 9 for Windowsfor Dummies, and Corel WordPerfect 8 For Windows For Dummies. They live together in Cornwall, Vermont.
Steve Askey passed along a lengthy piece that should bring everyone up to speed. He reports: 'After over four years in the jungles of Sumatra, or what's left of them, I'm transferring to the next island south—Java. That's in Indonesia for the geographically challenged. I'll be living in Jakarta. I'm still with Schlumberger Oilfield Services, now as account manager for all of BP and VICO activities of Schlumberger in Indonesia. That's a somewhat large and misleading title that translates into a lateral move, a little less money, but (I hope) better quality of life—or at least a life compared to Pekanbaru, Sumatra! It's still not advisable to drink the water, but at least one can buy wine in Jakarta! I'll be bringing my long-time girlfriend (or partner in PC-ese), the lovely Mbak Yenni (she was at the reunion if anyone can remember that far back), so participation in some of the joys of Jakarta maybe curtailed...but it's OK...really it is! If anyone is in the neighborhood (yeah, right!) drop a line. Let's see, classmate info: Peter Brooks confirms that he really did get married to Deny (congratulations—it only took 30 years or so!). He said the elusive Chuck Hostnik showed up at the wedding. Damn, I missed the sighting (and the wedding—sorry Peter). Kevin Keyes relates that Almost Admiral Frank Tezak may get the opportunity to participate in the impending war effort—from a desk? Sailing the desk? Don't know, maybe he can elaborate. Anyway, hello to those guys and anyone else who reads this." Whew!
Bill Hutchinson writes from Nantucket that we are blessed with numerous classmates on the Alumni Council (Fern Bennett Phillips, Martha Johnson Beattie, Cathy Joyce Brennan, Rob Saltzman and Carey Heckman), all of whom should be happy to share info with you as to what is going on with regard to the College. In the interest of space, I left their e-mail addresses out, but you can contact me for specifics. Hutch wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of all the resources that are out there for information, such as www.alum.dartmouth.org/council/jointcomm. Html and, of course, our own '76 topic site www.alum.dartmouth.org/~classtlk. We often only get the official College view, and the sites mentioned above may give some insight as to what type of issues the various organizations are involved with.

Finally, it is on a sad note that I must pass along the news that Robert Amundsen passed away on January 22 of this year. An obituary will follow.
Keep the news coming, and enjoy the warmer weather.
