With 37 alums active as of January,Dartmouth ranked first amongsmall schools in the Peace Corpsmost recent ranking of volunteer-producingcolleges and universities. The University of Virginia (with 80 volunteers) topped the medium school category and the University of Wisconsin at Madison (with 104) led the large school category.
Biology professor Carol Folt, who hasbeen acting dean of the faculty for twoyears, has been appointed to a five-yearterm as dean of the faculty of arts andsciences by President James Wright. An aquatic ecologist, Folt has been widely recognized for both her teaching and research.
Dartmouth athletes are the best, collectively,in the Ivy League, according to the2005-2006 U.S. Sports Academy Directors'Cup point standings. The standings employ a formula that weights performance in the most popular sports. Dartmouth is No. 34 among Division I schools—19 spots ahead of Yale, the No. 2 Ivy.
Red, yellow and green restrictions arenow posted at the Berry Baker Librarynot to combat terrorist threats but to limit food, drink and music. The most restrictive red coding applies in areas such as Rauner Special Collections, Jones Media Center, Evans Map Room and parts of the Sherman Library.
More than 10,000 of the more than14,000 admission applications filed forthe class of 2010 were submitted electronically. Admissions director Karl Furstenberg attributed the 19 percent increase in applications from foreign students to the convenience of applying online. Applications rose more than 10 percent for the fifth straight year.
