Brewings from Hanover. Now, late April, is one of the most glorious times to be in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire with crisp nights and sunny days. The College is going through a mini facelift, with many construction projects nearing completion: dorms to house about 500 students, a renovated gym with a terrific exercise area that now occupies the top floor where we all took final exams, the new athletic facilities over the east football stands, the Kemeny math building, the Haldeman Center and others. Our class tree planted outside the gym looks a little put out given it has been surrounded by portapotties during the gym reconstruction, but conditions should improve. I saw Brad Evans, classmate and trustee of the College, at a special dinner for college seniors and alumni with Jim Wright the key speaker. The dinner was a wonderful way for the College to talk about the importance of supporting the College going forward. Brad and co-trustee Peter Fahey '68 are providing a dollar match to encourage participation by the class of 'O6 in this years DCF. Thanks, Brad.
A fixture in the Hanover community for the past 36 years, Dave Hewitt, has just retired from the presidency of Dartmouth Printing Cos. Dave joined the company in 1970, not too long after graduating from Harvard Business School, and bought out the company in 1978 with Mike Smith. They sold the company in 1998, with Dave continuing as president. Dave and spouse Kate have built a beautiful new house along the Connecticut River, right next to beautiful new house of classmate Bill Lewis and wife Mary Ann in Lyme, New Hampshire. Dave says he relishes a little peace and quiet after fighting the printing industry battles for so long.
Speaking of New Hampshire, Gene Marshal has returned to Lisbon, New Hampshire, after a career in the Foreign Service. His service was exciting, with coups d'etat and evacuations in Syria in 1967 and Afghanistan in 1973, as the logistical efforts of presidential and VP state visits (Nixon and Rockefeller in Iran, Regan and Bush in China) for which he was involved. He was counselor of embassy and consul general in China, and in his last position in Washington he was deputy division director for Pakistan, India, Laos and Thailand. Back in New Hampshire Gene has been a two-term state congressman since he retired, and now is a devoted traveler with recent visits to points in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Our class sends condolences to the families of three classmates who passed away recently: Michael Emmett Ness of St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 19; William Gillies Cleland of West Hartford, Vermont, March 3; and Charles Dana Feustel, Ph.D., March 15.
The class mini-reunion in Washington, D.C., may have happened by the time you read this column. The dates are June 16-18. The program will provide attendees with a firsthand look at the civics training session given by Dartmouth's Rockefeller Institute to Washington interns (which was also featured in the last issue of DAM). Please contact Ed Williams at egwilliams@somlaw.com for details.
I need information on you, so please send me an e-mail at hrwhit@aol.com. Have a nice spring.
