D.B. Voorhees, in the spirit of the "Favorite Places" issue of this mag, wrote us some time ago from Brounfels, Texas, telling us eloquently of his Dartmouth memories, recalling the freshman-sophomore rush, the ice sculptures at Carnival, the spring duckboards and the great touch football games on the campus. He fondly reviewed the historic buildings and concluded with his impression of Baker Tower slowly disappearing as he descended the Main Street hill in final departure after Commencement. He did not speak of his accomplishments in skimming the hurdles on the track team under Harry Hillman's supervision. Perhaps he has discontinued this activity.
Not too long ago we received a report from Rick Bradshaw telling of the family celebration of his 90th birthday at the Dartmouth Outing Club and his walk around Occom Pond after supper on the porch, an exercise which "stirred memories of Winter Carnivals and skiing cross-country trails which started there."
Recently invited by the editor to submit information about memorable alumni, we called Manny Sprague to check his recollections of his water polo teammate, "Whip" Walser '32, a notable character, who, one day, in rebellious disregard of Chief Hallisseys specific ban on publicity, marched up the center of Main Street, with a rug over his head as a "disguise," and at the Inn corner gave a stirring speech to an admiring and cheering throng. Manny couldn't recall the incident, but assured me that he and Chalant were doing well and that he swims every day to keep that way.
