Bill Marshall represented the first wave of Dartmouth Peace Corps volunteers in a Dartmouth Life article tracing the Colleges 40 years of providing recruits. Bill taught English and coached basketball in a Moroccan Berber village in the high Atlas Mountains. He also met Donna, his wife-to-be, on the flight to the corps' training center in Utah. Bill and Donna went on to found an alternative school in Vermont and moved on to the Applewild School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where Bill was headmaster for 23 years and Donna taught art. Len Levitt, Tim Kraft, Tom Carter, Dave Dawley and Kevin Lowther were among other early Peace Corps volunteers.

Steve Rosen questions the relevance and efficiency of separately managed accounts (SMAs), personalized portfolios that became popular in the 1990s as alternatives to mutual funds. Lou Gerstner, former IBM chief and chairman of the Carlyle Group, the high-powered private equity firm, says he doesn't miss running a public company "for a second." On the eve of publication (November) of Chris Miller's The Real Animal House (Little, Brown & Cos.), Marty and Lenore Bowne give slightly differing views to the Daily D about life on campus at the time. Dartmouth men were viewed as "animals that were locked up in the wilderness and went crazy when women were around," said Lenore. "I'd like to think the guys were a bit better behaved when women were on campus," offered Marty. Meanwhile in a bizarre imitation of art, the real AD was raided in June by Hanover police.
