The class mini-reunion during the April 13-15 weekend was a great success. At least 15 members plus spouses came together to enjoy the National Collegiate Figure Skating Championships. The Dartmouth team, a club sport, had won the prior three years and with the class of '64 support the championships were brought to Hanover. Bob Bartles spearheaded the raising of more than $32,000 to fund the event. The Dartmouth team became a "fourpeat"—truly a great achievement for the team and the coaches, Mike '49 and Loren '92 McGean.The reunion arrangements made by Bob, Phil Schaefer and Ron Schram included a Friday luncheon attended by more than 150 who feted Mike McGean, former secretary of the College and founder of the Dartmouth Skating Club. The luncheon was MC'd by former dean Thadeus Seymour, "who was in great form." There was a class dinner at the Inn on Friday night as well. The competition took up Saturday and Sunday with the Big Green achieving a come-from-behind victory. Jim Wright '64A presented the trophy to the team. Other classmates in attendance were Scott Creelman, Dick Couch, Dale Eickelman, Frank Hannah, James Hughes, Bill Lewis, Bob Mac Arthur, Sandy McGinnes, Chris Palmer, Tom Spangenberg, John Topping and Ed Williams. Bob Battles said, "The great class of 1964 proved once again that it has the willingness and the resources to support Dartmouth whenever the need arises. To see the teammates and many skating alums singing arm in arm down on the ice following the win was most heartwarming." Ed Williams led the class meeting on Saturday morning and it was decided that the class project would be refocused around a new first-year public policy fellows program being developed by the Rockefeller Center. Ron Schram indicated he has received more than 64 submissions of sports remembrances that he will compile and publish perhaps by Labor Day. Ed reported that the participation goal for the Alumni Fund for the year ending June 30 is 93 people short of goal—and we need your help to hit the target. Great work, Ed, in pulling these events together for the class. In other news, Tim Brooks won a Grammy Award for the Best Historical Album based on recordings from his book Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919. Great achievement, Tim. Our friend Chuck Pitman relocated his primary residence to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, no doubt for the weather and golf. Chuck has been traveling, some for business, to Egypt, Australia and several times to Moscow. 'And, oh yes, we spent a few days in Las Vegas—our first time—and likely our last. Had to see what the fuss is all about. Now we know." Please put on your calendars Homecoming weekend scheduled for October 19-20.
