Explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who was appointed "Arctic consultant" by the College in 1947 once claimed that "adventure is a sign of incompetence." He knew from personal experience: His disdain for planning cost the lives of half his men on a 1913-16 Arctic expedition, during which photographer Sir Hubert Wilkins captured this image of Stefansson dragging a seal carcass across the ice. Despite his debacles, Stefansson made significant contributions to science and is being remembered during the current third International Polar Year. See story, page 46.
