For many of us not wealthy enough to endow our own scholarship fund, contributing to our Class of 1951 Fund is the next best thing. It is with great satisfaction that I present to you, the reader, our first scholars.
Caroline Wunsch '10 from Minneapolis is majoring in neuroscience and has a work-study job in the Hood Museum of Art shop. Her favorite extracurricular activity is running. When asked what the Dartmouth experience means to her, Carrie says, "It means gaining a more universal view of the world. Because Dartmouth is a liberal arts institution, students are encouraged to be well-rounded as well as to gain intimate knowledge within specific areas of interest. I believe that this combination of general knowledge and specificity helps students to be innovative thinkers within their field and to work well in interdisciplinary environments." Future pans are to pursue a career in medicine.
Robert A. Holland '08 of Irasburg, Vermont, a Rufus Choate Scholar, has a doublemajor in Chinese language and literature and economics. Off-campus activities have included studying abroad and internships. Abe studied at Oxford University in Oxford, England, and at Fundan University in Shanghai, China. Internships were with a consulting company in Shanghai and a hedge fund in Connecticut. Last summer Abe worked at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business as a research assistant for a finance professor. "Our research focused on the effect of investments in greenhouse gas reduction on the stock prices of publicly traded companies."
Not too often do I hear from classmates but the birthday cards I send occasionally elicit a response. The most recent was a phone call from Don Kope, whose Air Force career (195175) included a tour of duty in Merced, California. It must have agreed with him because he's been there ever since. After kidding me about his3-by-5 card pinch-hitting as a birthday card he reported recently having two heart attacks and a laminectomy, but other than that he's okay.
We report the deaths of Al LeClair and Jule Olney. Their obituaries appear in this issue; for longer obituaries on these men, go online: www.dartmouth.org/classes.sl.
