The updates for this issue come from a few clubs in New England. From a visit to a glass museum to a thrilling Dartmouth sporting event and a notable guest speaker, alumni are gathering all over the Northeast to connect with each other and have an enjoyable time.
The Dartmouth Club of Cape Cod (Massachusetts) held its May monthly meeting at the Sandwich Glass Museum. The guests watched a multimedia presentation that showcased some of the historical events that occurred in that local community. The museum has a working glass furnace and the group was treated to a glassblowing demonstration as well. There were about 30 guests at this event, which ended with lunch at the British Beer Co. The Dartmouth Club of Cape Cod consistently has interesting events and the food selections would make all of your mouths water. This club does a wonderful job of gathering alumni and their guests to partake in a wide range of events throughout the year.
There are places within our communities that we often overlook, and it's definitely worth the time to check out what hidden jewels may be near you and host an event. The club members and guests will enjoy a new location and the venue will appreciate the business and recognition.
From Cape Cod we head west to the Dartmouth Club of Central Massachusetts. This club again welcomed the Dartmouth men's crew team to Lake Quinsigamond for the Eastern Sprints in May. The alumni came out to help cook and Rachel Bettencourt '82 worked the grill like a professional all day. Those guys can sure eat a lot of hot dogs and hamburgers! This is an event each year that the alumni look forward to for many reasons. Alumni had the opportunity to interact with the students and talk about what is new on campus; alumni always enjoy remi niscing; and alumni get to cheer on the current student-athletes along with their parents and friends. The varsity men's eight heavyweight surprised the field and earned a fifth place finish. The roar of the fans was wonderful to witness. The Dartmouth family continues to expand each year with the new students and their families. The Eastern Sprints always proves to be an event where the Dartmouth spirit really shines.
Traveling to the south about an hour brings us to the Dartmouth Club of Rhode Island. With the increased focus on healthcare in America, the Dartmouth Club of Rhode Island welcomed the opportunity to have Chris Koller '83 as its guest speaker at the annual dinner in May at the DeWolf Tavern in Bristol. Koller is the first health insurance commissioner for Rhode Island and he spoke about the effect of the new healthcare legislation. The members and guests listened to Koller speak about his position and the critical role it will play in addressing many questions about healthcare. After dinner the guests exited the waterfront dinner room and enjoyed less structured time where they were able to engage in casual conversation with Koller, fellow alumni and guests.
