Mort and Nan Smith purchased their spacious cottage about five years ago and became the first residents in the Sugar Hill Retirement Community in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, on Lake Winnipesaukee, where they have a summer camp, now used by their three children's families. Randy, a Dartmouth grad, is a professor of sociology at Rutgers. Married daughters Betsy and Cindy live in Watchung, New Jersey, and South Burlington, Vermont, respectively, where both teach special education in the local schools. Mort was part of our original class semester in the summer of 1944 and was then drafted into the Army. After basic training he spent nine months at the University of Pennsylvania learning Japanese before being sent to Japan and then back to the United States and Dartmouth.
John Van Raalte, our gift planning officer, was invited by President Kim to be a guest of the Dartmouth College Fund for the Stephen F. Mandel '52 Society's reception and dinner at The Pierre in New York on April 15 to honor three new inductees, one of which was Betsy Leggat '82, daughter of our Dick and Patsy Leggat. The society recognizes alumni volunteers who provide visionary leadership in raising sifts to the College through the Dartmouth College Fund. Congratulations, Betsy. Its nice to see the progeny involved.
I D / Carl and Jan Evans recently moved from their rural home outside of Warwick, New York, to an apartment downtown while retaining the same phone number. Carl has some Alzheimer s prob- lems and they are able to maintain a 40-year relationship with friends and other infrastruc- ture without any maintenance responsibilities. They have two sons, two daughters and five grandchildren with plenty of family close by. Jan is now the full-time chauffeur and they plan to vacation as usual this summer at Drakes Island off Kennebunkport, Maine.
Please note that DAM lists alumni deaths and gives its website for obituaries, which are written by class secretaries on the same schedule as Class Notes plus about 10 days. They stay posted within the archives and can be found using the search function. There is space to add remembrances.
