The College an- nounced that MIT professor Rahul Sarpeshkar will join the faculty later this year. His work in bioengineering, electrical engineering and biophysics earned him a “top scientific breakthrough” notice from Scientific American magazine in 2012.

The board of trustees has announced the election of new charter trustee Carlos Rodriguez- Pastor, Tu’88, and two charter trustees-elect, Caroline Kerr ’05 and Beth Cogan Fascitelli ’80. Rodriguez-Pastor joined the board in June. Kerr and Cogan Fascitelli will join next year.

Star softball pitcher Kristen Rumley ’15 recently graduated but has no plans to leave the College: The three-time Ivy League Pitcher of the Year will serve as an assistant coach for the team next season. The four-time team MVP is the most decorated player in the program’s history.

FILM STUDIES Director Ken Burns continued his tradition of rolling out rough cuts of his documentaries at Dartmouth. In July he presented parts of The Vietnam War, a 10-part series set to air on PBS in 2017 that’s been in the works for a decade. The early buzz: It’s must-see TV.

RUNNING WILD Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek passed through campus July 1 on his way to setting a new record for running the entire Appalachian Trail. He finished in 46 days, 8 hours and 7 minutes, setting a new record by three hours.

DEAL! Noah Manning ’17 is the ninth student since 1830 to attend Dartmouth tuition-free as a resident of Wheelock, Vermont. Residents get the discount in return for area property given to Dartmouth—and since sold—in the 1700s.
