Clubs & Groups
CLASS NOTES
I hope that everyone is doing as well as possible given the circumstances. Dartmouth Clubs and Groups have continued to bring alumni together in creative ways these past months. David Dietze 78, president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, reported that the club welcomed associate professor Jodie Mack to its annual alumni seminar. She led a wonderfully interactive discussion and workshop about filmmaking and, in particular, the intersection of literary and painterly impulses in cinema. Give a rouse for Jonathan I. Rabinowitz 74 for organizing this event!
John Bash ’67, president ofthe Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee, Florida, shared that, on February 19, former sheriff of Sarasota County Tom Knight spoke about his new duties as CEO of First Step of Sarasota, which seeks to offer alternatives to law enforcement for persons with addiction or mental disease. Roger Stephenson ’60 was the program chair and Ed Mazer ’63 handled the Zoom. On March 19 writer, newspaper columnist, and mental health activist Carrie Seidman spoke about her odyssey from journalism to advocacy. Her brother, Tom Seidman 71, a Los Angeles-based film producer, participated in the virtual event, also arranged by Ed Mazer’63.
Alistair Ward ’92, current president of the Dartmouth Club of the Gulf Coast (DCGC), wrote in to report that the Dartmouth Women of the Gulf Coast Book Club has been meeting regularly (albeit virtually) to read and discuss books by Dartmouth alumni or professors. The club was thrilled to recently have Brigid Pasulka ’94, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton ’04, and Charlie Wheelan ’88 join an event to discuss their books. Regulars in the book club include Ginny Wise ’87. Heather Valliant ’91, Kimberly Coffey ’98 (also the club’s newtreasurer), Libby Flint 78, and Kathleen Morgan ’88. It is a wonderful group, full of laughter and insightful conversation! Recent DCGC alumni spotlights include the incredible environmental work that Kim Reyher ’92 is doing for the Gulf Coast community and the prolific Steve Herman ’91, who was not only lead plaintiffs’ counsel for the BP Oil spill litigation but also manages to publish numerous fiction and nonfiction works in his “spare” time.
In a historic year for Dartmouth admissions, the DCGC was lucky to be conducting its alumni interviews under the leadership of district enrollment directors Nina Wessel English ’96. Oliver Jenkins ’88, and Bobby Walter ’89. As the DCGC sees the light at the end ofthe tunnel, the club is cautiously optimistic that members might be able to have an in-person send-off for the ’25s this summer!
Thomas Skilton ’89 shared that the Dartmouth Lawyers Association (DLA) held its annual meeting in March in Alta, Utah, with virtual participation for members unable to travel. At its meeting, DLA elected its new officers for 2021-23. They are Joanna Cline ’95, president; Jeffrey Carton ’88, vice president (events); Curtis Leitner ’04, vice president (membership); Hilary Miller 73, treasurer; and Ellen Halstead ’98, secretary. The DLA also announced that its 2022 annual meeting and continuing legal education and ski event will take place in Sun Valley, Idaho, February 24-26. Details are available at www.dla.org. Thanks to former DLA president Tom Skilton ’89 for his excellent leadership through the years and for providing so many great updates for this column during his tenure.
Caroline M. Wayner ’88, president of the Dartmouth Club of Maryland, shared some good news about Dartmouth community members working hard to help young students during these difficult times. Meredith Shaw ’15 and Peter Andrew Kannam ’22 both supported the Baltimore City public charter school, Henderson Hopkins, with its recent reopening to in-person instruction this spring. Meredith is a staff member at Henderson Hopkins, and Peter used some of his off-term time from Dartmouth to volunteer at Henderson Hopkins, where his father, Peter, is the principal. Thank you for continuing to share your news. Please stay safe and send me updates about the great events that your club, association, or affiliated group has organized. —Stina Brock ’01, P.O.
