What a weekend! More '47s than ever attended our fall mini-reunion, October 1618, staying at the cozy Norwich Inn, enjoying the rally and the bonfire, and really enjoying the Yale football game. Ed Grady, who is his own boss and can issue a "column" whenever he wants, told the story and named names in a timely newsletter a while back.

As I prepare this column I note the number of notches on my pen 11. That's what year I am into now, writing these columns. Not bad for a guy who quaked at doing a column and only did so on the condition of finding an English major to carry on. At nine issues per year, you almost believe we could keep up with the changing Hanover scene, but in reality the campus moves pretty fast.

Let me bring us all up to date on a couple of items of interest from the fall class meeting. Our class intern, working in President Freedman's office, is Rebecca Meyercord '93 from Dallas. She's a bright, perky, and energetic friend of our class, and she would welcome a "hello" from visiting '47s. She's on the top floor of Parkhurst Hall most weekday afternoons.

Our class meeting brings out the best in our members, and we see a lot of expert guidance from our classmates who have "been there" in business or in their field of work. One can't miss catching the class spirit as HughChapin lays out planning goals for our 50th; as Bob Huffman prepares to survey class members on desires and expectations for our 50th; and as Norm Fink, Alan Epstein,Townes Harris, and Dick Hollerith express their concerns for a truly united class effort of support for the College leading up to our 50th. And Sax Fletcher already had samples of 50th yearbook layouts for us to see. And there was sage advice from our always present workers Lansing Reed, George Bingham, FrankWeber, Andy McCulloch, and HankBrezinski; light witticisms from Phil Segal,Bill Lynn and Burt Zuckernik; and don't overlook a growl or two from our marine, General Ed Grady. We'll be doing it again in April. Drop in.

And speaking of plans, A V-12 Navy/Marine reunion is planned for July 16-18, 1993, in Hanover. The war classes of 1945 through 1949 have obtained the College's cooperation in lending use of campus facilities and expertise for a nostalgic and fun weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dartmouth V-12 program, the nation's first and the largest of the military programs at 131 schools.

Starting July 1, 1943, and for two years thereafter, 1,337 sailors and 622 Marines arrived on the Hanover Plain to pursue from one to eight semesters of study, all of which led to a commission in the navy or marine corps after further training at military bases.

Nearly 80 percent of tie class of '47 was in this program, and we are sure that all involved will enjoy this weekend of seeing old friends and recounting war stories. See you soon.
