Thanks to our neighbor Nelson Smith, who continues to do a super job as class treasurer, we have quite an assortment of odds and ends of news. These all come to Nelson with class dues payments - another angle to the old adage, "money talks."
Vance Clark reports that he has "retired again," this time from E. F. Hutton, and, having retired, he says he is busier than ever.
Dud Robinson writes from Naples, Fla., that he has been going through some health problems. In his note he commented that he had just had his 18th visit to the hospital. However, Nels had a "phone call from Dud a couple of days ago sounding much more 'like himself.' "
A cheery note from Phil Payson tells us that he and Marion are "well and active." Phil mentions that he will have been 81 in November and that he still plays golf at least once a week on their nearby 60-par course. He refers to his several grandchildren, one of whom is in high school and is the pitcher on the school team and expects to make the quarterback position on the football team, plus playing on the basketball and soccer teams and enjoying golf and swimming.
We were delighted to receive in today's mail our copy of "The Smoker," written and produced by Bob Burroughs. It is good to have this back in circulation again and under Bob's skillful leadership, with help from his four associate editors - Russell Bailey, LorinGoulding, Sam Plumb, and Ing Baker.
As we reported some time ago, HaroldGeilich had sold his long-time home in Brockton and moved to Florida. They are now sharing their year between South Palm Beach and Chestnut Hill and find that it works out very well.
Ort Hicks's grandson, Bryan Smith, and Charles Gilson's granddaughter, Anne Gilson, are fellow freshmen at Denison University in Ohio. Bryan's mother Caryl, who is Ort's daughter, is the one who built the condominium community, Willow Springs Circle, at the foot of Balch Hill in Hanover.
Those of you who might have known the KenSaters would be interested, and saddened, to know that Ken's widow Margaret is reported to have died this past July.
We understand that Phez Taylor and his wife, of Sun Valley, had a cruise up around the North Cape of Norway this past spring or early summer. They were scheduled to come back home from Europe on the Concorde. They are pretty active travelers and, in fact, were planning a trip this fall to China. We will see if we can jog some reactions from them for a future issue.
We have been taking in the fall's home football games in Hanover and have enjoyed them (in spite of the scores). It looks as if this year's team, following the Green's win over Harvard, is building itself up into a potentially excellent football team. As of this writing, we are looking forward to this Saturday's game with Cornell, and will be commenting on it in our next issue. Incidentally, the next issue after this one will be a combined January-February number. That may give us a little more time to get a bit stocked up on news bits from you, with thanks in advance to you.
