Bonjour, Beth Webster! At the end of July Beth and her family moved to France for a three-year diplomatic assignment. “My husband is working at the U.S. embassy in Paris, where our kids (Nathaniel, 14, and Eleanor, 12) will live primarily and go to school at the American School of Paris. I am assigned as the U.S. consul for western France, based in Rennes and covering Normandy, Brittany, and the Pays de la Loire. So far we’ve been able to see each other three out of four weekends and during school holidays.” Regarding the pandemic, Beth reports that France has instituted a system in keeping with much of the European Union, where people have to either register their Covid vaccinations or negative Covid tests taken every three days in order to get a health pass to enter most restaurants and stores. “The system works well and has allowed the economy to start back up in a way that feels almost normal. People still have to wear masks when not eating or drinking, when inside public places, but it’s very sane. I hope that any ’95s heading through France will drop me a line—websterew@gmail. com—especially if you’re heading to western France!”

Congratulations to Daisy Florin, who recently sold her first novel. “It’s called My Last Innocent Year and is forthcoming from Henry Holt in 2023—the same year I turn 50, which feels about right. Writing has always been my one true love, so this is pretty much a dream come true. The story might appeal to Dartmouth readers: It takes place on a college campus not unlike Dartmouth in the late 1990s against the backdrop of the Clinton sex scandal.” I can’t wait to read it, Daisy.

That’s it for this month. As I was writing this column in the last days of 2021, Kent Dahn checked in to say that he was in New York City during the holidays and able to catch up with Teru Bower Clavel “on Madison Avenue after a nice walk through Central Park. Back to Los Angeles tomorrow morning.”
