CLASS NOTES

Dartmouth clubs and groups have been busy as always.

The Dartmouth Lawyers Association (DLA) shared that on September 19 Jason McManis ’08 presents a program called “Winning Trial Strategies: How to Persuade Today’s Judges and Juries.” That event is followed on September 27 by a presentation from Frank C. Vecella ’80 on “The Use of Experts in Litigation.” On October 5 the Hon. Beth Robinson ’86 and Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses ’78 present in person in Manhattan a program in which they share their “Reflections from the Bench.” Finally, in January 25-28, 2024, the DLA will have its annual continuing legal education and ski meeting at the beautiful Cliff Lodge in Snowbird, Utah. Thanks to Jeffrey Carton ’88, the president of the DLA, for the update.

Eric Freeman ’88, president of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Maryland, shared that the club recently held several fun events. In July the club attended a baseball game at Camden Yards between the Baltimore Orioles and the Miami Marlins. Attendees included Tom Goodridge ’61, Eric Freeman ’88, Daniel Bornstein ’14, Brenna Gourgeot ’18, Diem Trang ’94, and Dave Stephens ’75. Earlier in the summer the club participated in an All-Ivy event at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland. The event brought together alumni from Dartmouth as well as other Ivy League clubs in the greater Baltimore and D.C. region for a night of socializing and networking. In attendance were Ham Sonnenfeld ’16, Erika Cabrera ’19, Cornelia BrightGordon ’77, Alexandra Gordon ’13, Eric Freeman ‘88, Sequoyah Simermayer ’97, and Genevieve Simermayer ’98, among others. Special thanks to Daniel Bornstein ’14 and Erika Cabrera ’19 for their successful event planning efforts this summer.

The Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia hosted its annual Phillies game and tailgate this summer. Thirty-five people attended to watch the Phillies win against the San Diego Padres! Thanks to club president Dan O’Brien ’09 for the update.

David Dietze ’78, president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, reported that a big rouse is in order for Bill Cunningham ’78 and Brian Maher ’70 and his wife, Shelley, for organizing and hosting the club in July for its annual outdoor wine tasting. A great time was had by all in a beautiful setting at the Mahers’ home. David also shared that Bernardine Wu ’90 led the club in a send-off party for the newly admitted class of 2027 members from the area. As part of the event Bernardine and Nelli Black ’95 organized a panel of recent alums to discuss life on the Hanover Plain, held D trivia contests, arranged for a fun taco truck, and set up pong tables!

Barry Weeks ’72, the executive director of the Dartmouth Club of New York (DCNY), shared updates from several events. Recently, club president Charles Allison ’78 produced a video to “Welcome the Class of 23” to New York City. The club appreciated this new option from the alumni relations office that enabled clubs to communicate with graduating classes. Alumni relations also distributed an email to new graduates from the DCNY area to welcome them to New York. Thanks to board member Ken Marable ’74, parent of an ’05 and an ’08, DCNY was proud to promote the 24th annual Diversity Awareness Initiative for Students Multicultural Student Leadership Conference, which took place in May at Columbia Prep School. A number of DCNY alums volunteered to help out during 12 hours of programming. The executive director is Joan Marable ’76, parent of an ’05 and an ’08. Next, for the first time in many years, DCNY was able to welcome the return to NYC of the Pilobolus Dance Company. The club featured its “Big Five-oh!” presentation on July 17, followed by a reception and chat with Pilobolus dancers and staff. Pilobolus was founded at Dartmouth in 1971. The interim secretary is David Mechlin ’72. Lastly, the club has an annual D’art Blocks group of 70 tickets for the U.S. Open on August 29th and will surely enjoy a great outing.

Thank you for all you do for Dartmouth alumni! Please send me updates about the great events that you and your club members have organized.
