March mud. I'm curious, whatever happened to the boardwalks across the Green? Perhaps as a class project... NAH! Speaking of class projects, it was mentioned in our class newsletter that we are investigating the idea of sponsoring an annual bonfire at the College, while also addressing the environmental concerns being voiced on campus. I am talking with the chair of the College's Committee on Bonfires, and I'll keep you posted.
I just heard from Carolyn Kohn Eckstein, who kindly called to share her enthusiasm for the bonfire project. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with her also. She describes the past five years as "a blur... decorating homes, making two babies and raising two stepchildren, and serving on four boards." In an attempt to "uncomplicate life," Carolyn has resigned from all extracurricular life except for the chairmanship of a private school board. She reports: "I have dusted off my health club card and tennis racquet. The children are at such wonderful ages, 2 1/2 and 5, that I am really enjoying being with them more. A lot of the hard work of setting up my life seems to be over and it's nice to sit back and enjoy rather than move forward for awhile."
Carolyn had some news of others: Mark Gamell and his wife, Doreen, have a new home in Port Washington, N.Y. Mark is a partner in his law firm, Doreen continues to be an opera singer, and together they still do some theater, too. They have two daughters. Another Dartmouth drama connection, Andrea Quaid, is loving Europe, living in Paris, and working in the securities industry with a French bank. Carolyn had one "missing person" request: She wants to know the whereabouts of Cathy Martell Vargo. Last she knew, Cathy and husband Ron Vargo had completed graduate work at Stanford and were living in Ohio. Any updates?!
From several different sources, but not from the horse's mouth, I have heard rumors of Tom Ruegger's continued rising stardom! Apparently, Tom is working with Steven Spielberg on a new venture involving the recently purchased rights to the Disney characters. Word has it that Tom is creating the Disney Babies characters for Mr. Spielberg. It's very exciting, and I hope this thirdhand version of the story at least vaguely resembles the facts! We received a gorgeous picture of Tom and Adrienne's three boys (Luke, Cody, and Nathan), so we know how busy life must be in Northridge, Calif.
baseball, and he is thrilled with his job. Jim loves being in on all the wheeling and dealing, but is glad he didn't know then (when he was playing) what he knows now!" Martha says her rowing and the three children, along with a little math tutoring and substitute teaching, are keeping her busy. She had a masters four enter the Head of the Charles this year. Their average age was 54, and they beat two college "championship" fours! Martha says the coaching gives her a "refreshing focus outside the home." They are loving Seattle, but missing their friends and family back East. Until we meet again
