CAMPUS
The College inaugurates its 19th president.
More than 1,200 people gathered on the Green for speeches, selfies, songs, and, of course, a peek at the Wentworth Bowl on inauguration day, September 22.
In making her first official presidential address, Sian Beilock announced an array of new initiatives. “Mental health, brave spaces, Dartmouth for life, action on climate, breakthrough innovation,” Beilock told the crowd. “This is my vision. These are our aspirations. And this is my call to action for you.”
The following are some highlights.
► Plans for “the single largest investment” in student living spaces in more than a generation include the creation of at least 1,000 new beds for students, faculty, and staff housing within 10 years. Beilock hopes to have dorms close “to the heart of campus.”
► Doubling investment in the Upper Valley Loan Fund, a consortium of large local employers, to hasten the construction of affordable housing. The College’s contribution will rise to $3 million.
► Coming partnerships with Dartmouth Health and other local organizations will expand childcare options for employees beyond recently announced subsidies for working parents. ►“To live up to our title of‘Big Green,’ ” Beilock called for “an aggressive push to achieve real carbon zero on our campus,” which focuses on local investments within the New England electric grid, including more than $250 million in additional investments in campus decarbonization efforts in the next three years and new emissions targets for 2030 and 2050.
► Promoting diversity in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, Beilock has partnered with female leaders from five other research universities to bring more women into the engineering workforce.
►A new program, the Dartmouth Dialogue Project—designed to “intentionally teach the skills of open, honest, and respectful communication both in and out of the classroom”—will launch this fall.
► Building on Dartmouth’s unique relationships with Native and Indigenous communities, Dartmouth will soon launch a Tribal Leadership Academy to “provide a place for experienced and newly elected tribal leaders to convene with one another to share best practices, discuss opportunities and challenges facing sovereign tribal nations, and engage the expertise of Native alumni and Dartmouth faculty across campus.” —The Editors
