New football coach Sammy McCorkle knows exactly what to do.
There was little doubt who would step in for Buddy Teevens ’79 after the football coach’s recent bicycle accident in Florida. Sammy McCorkle has worked with Teevens for 18 seasons and knows every branch and leaf on the Teevens coaching tree, making him an easy pick. Athletic director Mike Harrity named McCorkle interim head coach on May 10. “Sammy has kept everyone focused and purposeful as we prepare to compete for another Ivy League title this fall and make Buddy proud,” Harrity said.
McCorkle fits the big shoes he’s filling. “You don’t realize how much you learn from somebody until you’re in a situation [like this],” says the former standout defensive back for the University of Florida Gators. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is that there’s much more to this than X’s and O’s. The big thing is the culture of your program and building relationships. There’s a purpose to everything Buddy does.”
Teevens, 66, was cycling in Florida on March 16 when a pickup truck struck him, resulting in a set of injuries that required the amputation of his right leg. In April his wife, Kirsten, issued a statement that said Teevens was being taken to a premier rehab facility to continue healing. “Spinal cord injuries are challenging, and if anybody is up for the challenge, it is Buddy,” she wrote.
The tragic accident rocked the College, and the athletics department has forwarded hundreds of messages of support to the Teevens family.
“I’ve been very fortunate to be with him all these years, building this program to where it is now,” says McCorkle, whose college days included playing on four Southeast Conference championship squads. He lives in Hanover with his wife, Vicki, with whom he has three daughters.
The players have handled Teevens’ absence with resilience. “They’ve done a very good job of realizing the expectations haven’t changed, the expectations that Coach Teevens has created and that we hold these guys to,” says McCorkle. “They’ve done a phenomenal job of staying the course and continuing to follow that blueprint that he’s established here. They realize how important that is to him.”
The season opens at the University of New Hampshire on September 16.
