1956
Rick Worrell included among musings about the most recent Commencement the following: “Our grandson Max Martin was a member of the ski team at Dartmouth and was recognized as an allIvy League athlete. He must have gotten all the talents from his other grandfather.”
Jack Crowley, former occupant of this chair, has provided the following request for contributions to the “Men of Granite,” a burgeoning endowment fund exceeding $2 million to support the coaching, travel, equipment, etc., of those who play rugby. He writes, “The class of 1956 has had a major impact on Dartmouth rugby. Mary Ellen and George Brophy, influenced by Doug Stevenson, donated the field. Corey Ford, author and rugger emeritus, funded the field house with encouragement from Stevenson, Art Zich, John Koering, and other’56ers, some of whom actually played the game, such as Woody Gray, Tom Burris, Tony Bruscino, George Brophy, Jack Crowley, Mac Barker, Tommy Knott, Ed Ross, Al Maca, Rick Webb, Line Spaulding, Tom Bechler, et al. Let’s continue the 70-year-old tradition by making a tax-efficient gift to Dartmouth rugby in anticipation of our 70th reunion.”
More than welcome contributor Kirby Fowler emails “I wanted to let you know of a very unusual gift from my children. At the Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics game at Fenway Park on July 91 threw out the first pitch just before the game started and met the former star Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg, Cy Young winner in 1967, before 30,000 fans.”
Word ofthe day is echt. I chose this word not only because it means authentic and typical, but also because I like the sound of it as it flows over my p artial and strikes the listener’s ear with a note of distaste suggesting aversion. Apparently, failure to provide copy for the next column is typical of the members of our class and therefore all of you are echt.
With sadness, I report the passing of Kevin Gude Ryan, M.D., William “Bill” K. Beard Jr., Judge Bertrand L. Poritsky, and John Roger Compton.
