Steph Westnedge, Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association cochair, reports on the organization’s 25th anniversary celebration on May 3-5 in Hanover: “We had a good turnout of about 138 alums and attendees across eight decades to see George Takei and Helen Zia, share stories and reminisce, and celebrate individuals who contributed so much to the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders community.
“We had to do a quick pivot as the only alumni group on campus after student protests and arrests of May 1. Thankfully, the board and the planning committee already had a good working relationship. A special shoutout to Gina Lam, whose influence was felt throughout the event. Though her name only appears in the schedule moderating one event, ‘From Allyship to Solidarity: Tectonic Shifts,’ Gina had her hand in just about everything from the swag bag to all the programming with Dartmouth people. Thank you, Gina, we couldn’t have done it without you! Looking forward to the next one in five years and I hope to make it up to Hanover.”
Liana Frey now runs Greenshot, Dartmouth’s new accelerator program for climate entrepreneurs, a joint project of the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship and the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society. On May 13 the accelerator program’s nine teams presented at the annual Dartmouth Entrepreneurs Forum in N.Y.C., culminating in a $75,000 grant for the winner. Alex Bernadotte also moderated a fireside chat with Shonda Rhimes ’91 during the event.
Steve Fox relates: “On the weekend of May 18 a number of’92 football players returned to campus to attend Coach Teevens’ celebration of life. The weekend was bittersweet; bitter because we lost someone who had a huge, positive impact on our lives, and sweet because we caught up with a lot of old friends. Also in attendance were Chris Mawn, Dave Viljoen, Mark Mader, Jerry Gilbert, Dave Sharkey, Ed Burley, Cliff McDonald, Greg Rush, Dave Harrison, Bernie Teracevicz, Deke Schultze, Matt Kastantin, Craig Smith, Sal Sciretto, Rob Birge, Rob Leggat, Tom Morrow, and Matt Taylor.” (A photo is in the June newsletter at 1992.dartmouth.org/news.) “Also, a big thanks to Judy Parish Oberting ’91 and Kip Oberting ’91 for hosting a party for the ’88 to ’94 Dartmouth players to gather Saturday night.”
Ed Hopkins, lead principal engineer at Stratolaunch, wrote with big news this spring: “We had our first successful, powered flight of the Stratolaunch Talon A reusable hypersonic test vehicle.” He added, “I run into Cy Torchinsky in Ocean Beach, San Diego, often walking his daughter and Rasta dog around!”
