Clubs & Groups
CLASS NOTES
Dartmouth clubs and groups have been holding interesting events for our alumni community, as always.
The Dartmouth Lawyers Association held its 37th annual “CLE [Continuing Legal Education] & Ski” meeting on February 6-8 at the Fairmont Tremblant, Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The meeting was chaired by Richard L. Merrill ’73 and the continuing legal education program on Canadian and international law featured Dan Crowley ’73, Jim Roberts ’98, and two Canadian jurists, the Hon. Carol Cohen and Hon. Ian Demers, as speakers. In addition to the CLE program, the meeting included receptions and dinners for all three nights and, of course, skiing. Among the 45 registrants, attendees spanned a spectrum of classes from 1963 to 2014 and a geographic diversity covering 16 states from Alaska to New Hampshire.
John Bash ’67, president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee, Florida, reports that on January 17 the club hosted Kenneth Feld, the owner of Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus and other organizations. Former owner of the Big Apple Circus Paul Binder ’63 rounded out the discussion on circuses and other entertainment businesses.
Mike Meehan ’72 announced the club’s essay contest for the class of 2025: the crisis of homelessness and what we can do about it. Mike generously underwrites the cash prizes for this contest and the winners are then invited to address the club.
On February 21 the club welcomed Geisei Medical School professor of surgery Linton Evans, Med’10, Geisei alumni relations officer Mae Leonard, and Geisei development officer Elizabeth FitzGerald. Dr. Evans described innovations at Geisei and DHMC. He recounted his work with Thayer Engineering to produce very precise equipment used in neurological surgeries. Doctors Peter Mayer, Med’87, Ryan Budwany, Med’OS, John Bullock ’65, Med’66, and Fred Jarret ’63, Med’65, were among the Dartmouth physicians who participated.
Carl Battle ’76, a trustee of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Healthcare Foundation, suggested a few local non-Dartmouth physicians to invite. Benny Axt, Adv’26, described his graduate studies with the Dartmouth Institute and Tuck School toward an M.S. in healthcare delivery science that will be granted in 2026.
President emeritus of the club, Garvey Clarke ’57, inquired about prospects for government funding of research at medical schools. Club members greatly appreciated Dr. Evans’ informative and clear presentation on Dartmouth medical matters.
David Dietze ’78, president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, reported that the club has been busy. Under the leadership of Joe Dempsey ’83, 25 people gathered for a day of service at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, the state’s largest food pantry.
Just before Christmas event chairs Dietze and Marco Zarbin ’78, with great support from local Women of Dartmouth leaders Sherry Cai ’98 and Anne Whitman ’93, welcomed 11 successful early-decision applicants for the class of 2029 amid at least 50 alums and friends at Dietze’s home.
The Dartmouth Club of Oregon and SW Washington is pleased to announce Devon Carew ’96 as the club’s new president. Sharon Grayzel ’87 and Carolyn Choi ’90 are happy to have stewarded the club through the pandemic and a little bit beyond. All are excited to see what new things Devon’s leadership will bring to the club!
The Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., has kept busy, club president Kevin Hudak ’07 reports. In the fall the club hosted a “Welcome to D.C.” ping-pong event for young alumni, enjoyed a local theater production that recreated the legendary Billie Holiday’s last set at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (with a memorable cast meet and greet thanks to the Mosaic Theater Company and Cathy Green Solomon ’82), and gathered for a Homecoming watch party.
Closing out 2024, more than 120 area alumni gathered for the club’s annual holiday party at The Admiral in Dupont Circle, with attendees representing almost 60 years up to the newly minted ’24s.
To kick off 2025 alumni gathered January 25 for a Martin Luther King Jr. service event at D.C.’s Capital Area Food Bank, sponsored by the Dartmouth Club and the D.C. chapter of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association (BADA), creating meaningful connections and serving D.C. community members in need.
In addition, the club’s local Bridges to Impact ’24s gathered for an in-person career mentoring panel on federal and civil service featuring Scott Cameron ’77, Emily Kornegay ’99. and Judge John Mott ’81.
Finally, the club thanks outgoing 202324 president Peter Arnold ’86 for his fantastic leadership. Peter has been an integral part in planning and producing all of these great events and was generous enough to open his home for impromptu pong tournaments and Homecoming watch parties through the years. Please reach out to the club at dartmouth clubofdc@ gmail.com if you’re interested in volunteering or joining for an upcoming event.
Thank you for all you do for the Dartmouth alumni community! Please send me updates about the great events that you and your club members have organized.
