Clubs & Groups
Dartmouth Clubs & Groups continue to plan and organize many interesting events for our alumni community!
Jennifer Avellino ’89, parent of a ’23 and vice president of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., wrote in to share that the club recently held its 2024 Daniel Webster Awardfor Public Service event. The event was held in May, in person for the first time since 2019. Approximately 120 alumni and current students attended. The students were part of the spring government department program in D.C. led by professor Lisa Baldez. This year’s awardee was Susan N. Shankman ’91, senior rabbi at Washington Hebrew Congregation. She is the first woman to serve in this role in the congregation’s 170-year history and the first female president of the Washington Board of Rabbis. The evening featured a conversation between Rabbi Shankman and Dartmouth trustee Neal Katyal ’91 about Dartmouth, interfaith community dialogues, and other subjects. She was introduced by former U.S. Secretary ofthe Army Eric Fanning ’90, her undergraduate advisor. Seven other past Webster Award winners attended, including Susan Dentzer ’77, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand ’88, and Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff ’68.
John Bash ’67, the president ofthe Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee, Florida, reports that for several years the club has sponsored, and Mike Meehan ’72 has generously underwritten, an essay contest for Dartmouth seniors. This year’s winner was Lintaro Donovan ’24, whose essay covered how Dartmouth can help improve primary and secondary education in the United States.
The Dartmouth Club of Hawaii held its annual send-off party on July 27. Kelii Opulauoho ’96, parent of a ’26, shared that Dr. Timothy McDevitt, DMS’87, and Candice McDevitt hosted the event. Eleven Dartmouth first-years and their families attended the wonderful gathering.
The Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia had an incredibly busy summer of events and is looking forward to another season of service and socializing together in the months ahead. In July nearly 40 alumni and their families connected at a Phillies game and tailgate for what was both an exciting game and an incredibly hot summer day. Thanks to Dan O’Brien ’09 for working the grill and keeping everyone well fed before the game. Speaking of Dan, the club wants to send him a big thank you for serving as club president for the past two years. Tim Koeth ’12 will be stepping in as president and welcomes any interested local area alumni to join the club board. The club also celebrated a class of 2028 send-off party at the Radnor Hunt Club in mid-August, hosted by Christina Graham, parent of a ’28, and family. The club is looking forward to upcoming events such as the Big Green affair on September 26, a meetup for alumni parents of young children (date to be announced), its annual clean-up of Cobbs Creek Park in November, and the annual holiday party in early December.
Thank you for all you do for Dartmouth alumni! Please send me updates about the great events that you and your club members have organized. —Stina Brock ’01, P.O. Box 9274, Jackson, WY 83002; stina.brock@gmail.com
