A famous jewel, presented by a London broker in 1785 to the president of Dartmouth College and designed to be worn by him on occasions of state, has recently been discovered in the vaults of Parkhurst Hall, after having been lost sight of for several years. This jewel, which is oval in form, is of beaten gold. On the obverse appears a representation of the sun; below it a group of figures in high relief illustrate the fable of the old man, his three sons, and the bundle of sticks; beneath all is inscribed the motto "Unanimity is the Strength of Society." The reverse, which is of silver, bears, under a shield, the inscription: "The gift of John Flude, broker, Grace Church Street, London, 5 April, 1785, to the President of Dartmouth College, for the time being at Hanover in the state of New Hampshire." President Nichols will probably now resume the old custom of wearing the jewel on all important academic occasions.
