Edwards D. Emerson has been appointed by the mayor one of the five members of the board of education of the city of Buffalo, N. Y., and upon its organization was unanimously elected president of the board. The city of Buffalo was about the only city in the United States without a school board. The superintendent has been elected by the people, and had the appointment of all teachers. The buildings were erected by the city government. All of this work is now done by the board of education. Mr. Emerson is local manager of the Standard Oil Company, also president of the University club of Buffalo.
