Following the somewhat disappointing score of the Norwich game the indecisiveness of the contest with Maine and the raggedness of the play of the afternoon quite naturally filled the local atmosphere with gloom. The Dartmouth offense was unable to get started, the backs tripped over their interference and over themselves, the line moved slowly and in a haphazard fashion. In short the gloomiest of pre-season forebodings seemed justified. The only perceptible light rays were the quarterback play of Dooley and the running of Hall, these things justifying the shift of Hall from the pilot position and the installation of Dooley at that berth. Throughout the afternoon Dartmouth drew many penalties for off-side play and holding and, altogether looked like a very green team.

Dartmouth's lone touchdown came in the second period. The period opened with the ball on Maine's 41-yard line. Maine was penalized five yards and Hall carried the ball for an additional five yards. A pass from Dooley to Watkins and a center buck by Dooley took the ball to the 5-yard line. Here Bolles, replacing Hall, gained two yards, and on the next play Dooley, running against the back of Captain Aschenbach, went across the goal line.

Haws, the most consistent ground gainerin the backfield, provided a few shafts ofhope for an otherwise dispirited gatheringof spectators.
