FRESHMAN FOOTBALL
December, 1923

An Exeter touchdown early in the first period proved an insurmountable obstacle to the freshman team in starting its season at Exeter, October 6. Following a 25-yard run by McPhail, the schoolboy fullback, a short lateral pass to the same player resulted in the only scoring of the day. Captain Charlesworth, of Exeter, kicked the goal. The final score was Exeter 6, Freshmen 0.

For the freshmen the work of Hardy at left tackle, and Legacy at left halfback was outstanding. The former prevented several long Exeter gains while Legacy showed proficiency in passing and in carrying the ball.

Completely overwhelming the lighter school team, the freshmen won, their first home game October 13 by defeating Kimball Union Academy 46 to 0. The freshmen made 18 first downs to none for the Academy team. Long end runs, line plunges, and a successful passing game accounted for the Dartmouth point total. Weston, the freshman halfback, scored three touchdowns and kicked two goals after touchdown. Carver, Cort, Fuqua, Legacy and Shea scored touchdowns, and Carver two trys for point.

The freshman team of Springfield Y.M.C.A. College opposed the Dartmouth Freshman team on Memorial Field, October 20, in a game in which the aggressive attack of the Hanover first year men gained them 41 points to 6 for the visiting team. The Dartmouth team was held scoreless during the first half of the contest, but thereafter rushed and passed the ball for six touchdowns, three of which were scored in the last IS minutes of play. Springfield's touchdown was made in the last quarter of the game when the Dartmouth freshmen became careless through over-confi-dence. Gabriel scored for the visitors on a lateral pass after the Springfield team had been held for three downs on the Dartmouth one-yard line. For Dartmouth Fuqua scored two touchdowns, and Cronin, Fryberger, Legacy, and MacCauley each one. Cronin kicked three goals after touchdowns and Carver two.

The Freshman team which met Dean Academy at Franklin, Mass., October 27, was a more or less impromptu one necessitated when seven of the regular members of the team were declared ineligible because of low scholarship a few days before the game. A daring forward pass attack by Dean carried the ball 62 yards to Dartmouth's 28-yard line. Here the Freshman team temporarily held the invaders at bay but three more forward passes were successful in taking the ball six inches from the Dartmouth goal. The Dartmouth team kept the opposition from gaining for three plays but on the fourth the ball was pushed across for a touchdown. The Freshmen tried desperately to score in the third quarter and lost an opportunity by a fumble at Dean's 10-yard line after Carver had carried an intercepted pass 30 yards. Dartmouth eventually scored when Pike, substituting for Battin, received a pass from Cohen and ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Dean scored its second touchdown late in the fourth period, again by means of a forward pass attack, with Donovan receiving a pass beyond the Dartmouth goal line.

By means of a consistent and powerful offense the Dartmouth Freshman team defeated the Brown Freshman team at Hanover, November 2, by a score of 14 to 0. At no time did the Brunonians threaten the Dartmouth goal and only in the first period was the offensive play of the visitors noticeably effective. In that quarter the Brown team made three of the five first downs it registered during the afternoon. Carver, of Dartmouth, intercepted a forward pass to put an end to the attack. Legacy made the first touchdown for Dartmouth late in the second period when a consistent rushing and passing attack had carried the ball close to the Brown goal. The second touchdown was made late in the third period on a short pass across the goal line from Cort to Fryberger. The game was featured by spectacular end runs and passes and by brilliant individual work on both teams.

Princeton's Freshman team easily defeated the Dartmouth Freshmen at Princeton, November 16, by a score of 26 to 6. Frequent fumbles by the Dartmouth team and a successful aerial offense by Princeton were re- sponsible for the decisiveness of the score. Marching down the field for three first downs which culminated in a touchdown by Carver the Dartmouth Freshmen got away to a good start and led by a score of 6 to 5 at the end of the first half. Ewing had kicked a goal from the field for Princeton and Croft had been forced across the Dartmouth goal line by a blocked kick, for a safety touchdown. In the third quarter Ewing scored for Princeton after a spectacular 30-yard run by Prendergast and Meyer added another touchdown by intercepting a Dartmouth pass and running 40 yards. Prendergast scored the third touchdown for Princeton after a series of line bucks alternated with end runs and forward passes.

The freshman season was not as satisfactory as it has been for the past few years due mainly to the low scholarship of members of the team which resulted in seven players being declared ineligible. Again the schedule for the team which called for a hard game very shortly after the opening of College, then a series of games entirely too easy to be valuable in shaping the team, and finally left the team with an open date at the crest of the season was an unfavorable one.

Hanover has had little chance to learn whether or not there are men of real promise as varsity material among the men of the Freshman squad. However, Wallace and Hardy, tackles, and Legacy, a halfback, appeared to be men the varsity coaches may find of great assistance.
