John Dean and Dick Hayes were double winners for Harvard. The former won both the discus and shot, and broke his own meet record in the discus event with a heave of 155 feet 4 1/2 inches. Hayes was first in both the high and low hurdles. Cahners of Harvard set another meet record when he threw the hammer 162 feet 4 inches. One of the most stirring races of the afternoon was the 400-meter battle in which Captain Jack Morse of Harvard nosed out Joe Donovan, Dartmouth's sensational sophomore runner.
Against Army at West Point on May 19, the Indians' strength in the track events balanced the Cadets' power in the field events, and an unusual 63-63 tie resulted. The omission of the hammer event made the total points for the meet 126 rather than the customary 135.
Button and Hine finished one-two in both the 100- and 220-yard dashes, and Neff's third in the latter event gave Dartmouth a sweep. Embry and Kahn took their respective hurdle specialties, and Donovan finished first in the 440-yard run. Army swept both the 880-yard and twomile runs, and Proctor of Army defeated Quimby in the mile.
In the field events, Woodbury captured the high jump at 6 feet 3 inches, Brister cleared 13 feet 4 inches to win the pole vault, and Keller, Rodman and Colton took all three places in the broad jump. Army swept the discus event, took one-two in the javelin, and captured first and third in the shot.
The outdoor intercollegiates at Philadelphia on May 26 close the Green track season.
