In their big home game of the season the freshmen were forced to be content with a tie score. The Brown yearlings were entertained on Friday, October 31, the day preceding the Varsity-Brown game, and made the battle a very even affair.
Both teams elected to use a passing game and long and short heaves were used frequently and fearlessly at all stages of the game. This type of play was, however, not directly productive for either team. The two scores of the afternoon were the result of alert football.
Dartmouth tallied first late in the opening quarter when Phelan intercepted a Brown forward. Straight football took the ball to the 10-yard mark and the only penalty of the afternoon carried it five yards nearer the goal line. Then it took but two rushes to put it across. The try for goal failed.
Brown's score came late in the third quarter when one of Lane's punts was blocked giving the Bruin cubs the ball on the 20-yard line. Although the Green held stubbornly after Brown earned first down with six yards to go, the ball was taken over on fourth down. Again the try for goal failed.
During the remainder of the game the ball shifted from one end of the field to the other with both teams gambling 011 long gains by the aerial route. At one time Brown reached the 15-yard line but was unable to make good the try for a goal from the field.
