THORNTON HALL DISCLOSES OLD COINS AND PAPERS
April 1924

As evidence that the matching of pennies was an indoor sport at Dartmouth as far back as 1818, The Dartmouth recorded recently the discovery, during the process of reconstructing Thornton Hall, of four pennies dated, 1818, 1825, 1827, and 1829 respectively. There were also found in the old dormitory two old, thinstemmed clay pipes, and an old fashioned pair of "spring handle" scissors. One of the broomhandle "guns" used in military drills during the time of the Spanish-American War was also unearthed, and two other "relics," a copy of the New England Journal of Education, for October 28, 1876, ana a copy of the Boston Herald for May 18, 1898.
