DARTMOUTH NIGHT CELEBRATED DESPITE HEAVY RAIN
November, 1025

Under the most adverse conditions in many years Dartmouth celebrated its 30th "Dartmouth Night" in Webster Hall, Oct. 9. A pouring rain necessitated the elimination of the customary torchlight procession, but the bells in the chapel tower pealed and cannons boomed to summon Dartmouth men to the meeting.

President Ernest M. Hopkins presiding over the exercises stated again the purpose of the annual "Dartmouth Night" celebration: "To enhance emotion, and to give reasons why we rank the Dartmouth spirit high." The President read many of the telegrams sent to the College by alumni groups who were meeting at the same time in many parts of the world. He introduced as speakers, Victor M. Cutter '03, Jesse B. Hawley '09, and Edward K. Woodworth '97.

Mr. Cutter, President of the United Fruit Cos., commenting on the changes within the College during the last two decades, paid particular tribute to the development in the undergraduate body of a healthy critical spirit. Mr. Hawley, at present serving for the third year as head coach of the football team, urged upon the entire college the same acceptance of responsibility that characterizes the men of the varsity teams which uphold Dartmouth's athletic prestige. Mr. Woodworth's theme was the value of service inspired by deep emotion.

In an attempt to regain something of the more intimate nature of the Dartmouth Night celebrations of earlier years the exercises this year were held in Webster Hall instead of in the tent on the campus or in the gymnasium, and the attendance was limited to undergraduates, alumni, and men of the instruction corps.
