On January 19 the President's office announced a generous gift, from Mr. George F. Baker of New York, of one hundred thousand dollars for the establishment of a special endowment fund in memory of his uncle, Fisher Ames Baker.
Fisher Ames Baker was graduated from Dartmouth in the class of 1859. During his undergraduate course he was one of the organizers and captain of the military company known as The Dartmouth Greys. This was a group of undergraduates who' associated themselves together in 1856 for military training and the .study of military tactics. It was one of the precursors of those many military groups at Dartmouth and elsewhere which later bore so prominent a part in the Civil War.
Colonel Baker, for whom this fund is established as a memorial, served with distinction throughout the war, holding the commission of lieutenant colonel at its end.
At the close of his military service Colonel Baker resumed his law practice in New York and remained actively engaged in this until his retirement in 1912. At his retirement from active practice he not only had achieved large success but likewise had won recognition as one of the leaders in his profession.
Mr. Fisher Ames Baker died at his home in Yonkers, .May 10, 1919.
