The English Speaking Union, which was founded and operates to encourage and stimulate friendly intercourse between English and American students who travel in both countries, announces through their monthly magazine, The Landmark, that funds are being generously donated to equip a library in Dartmouth House, in Dartmouth, England.
Referring to the gifts, The Landmark says: "In the last month's issue it gave us great pleasure to announce that Sir Otto Beit, Bt.always a generous supporter of worthy causes —had given &1000 as the first of two donations of that amount to the Page Memorial Library in Dartmouth House. This month we have equal pleasure in announcing that just after we had gone to press for August, Major The Hon. J. J. Astor, M.P. (who is, of course, joint honorable treasurer of the English Speaking Union),_ made a similar gift to the furnishing and equipment fund, namely $lOOO this year and a promise of the same sum next year. The amount of £11,900 has now been given or promised towards the £15,000 which it is estimated will be required to furnish and equip Dartmouth House in a manner worthy of its aspirations, and we hope that the example of Sir Otto Beit and Major Astor will be followed by others, so" that the desired total may be quickly reached."
