Robert B. MacPhail '28, versatile Dartmouth athlete who played at quarterback on the 1925 football team and at right halfback throughout the 1926 season has been elected captain of the team for next year. His election by the varsity football men was recorded on a second ballot, when the first ballot resulted in a tie between MacPhail and Lane, Dartmouth left halfback, and was ratified by the Athletic Council.
MacPhail entered Dartmouth from Phillips Exeter Academy where he starred as a fullback on the school team and captained the team in his senior year. During his freshman year at Dartmouth he played in his customary position on coach Hazelton's Freshman Team and was elected also to captain that group. When, last year, varsity coach Hawley, was in dire need of a quarterback to fill the position left vacant by the absence of Dooley and Fallon, MacPhail assumed that position and won recognition for himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the East. With the return of Dooley to Hanover this season Hawley placed MacPhail at right halfback where his ability as a ball-carrier made him an ideal mate for Lane, Dartmouth high-scorer, who held down the other halfback position. MacPhail served several times as acting captain of the team, during the past season when Horton was un'able to play.
MacPhail is a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and the Green Key, and is President of the Junior Class.
