In recognition of his work in science and literature and the interest he has shown for the people of Denmark, Dr. John A. Detlefsen, Dartmouth '08, former Austin Teaching Fellow at Harvard, and later a Professor at Illinois and the University of Pennsylvania, has been made a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog,, it was announced here today.
Membership in the order was conferred upon Dr. Detlefsen by the King of Denmark and Iceland, and carries with it a gold cross which has been forwarded to the scientist by officials, of the Royal Danish Legation in Washington.
Dr. Detlefesen, who is of Danish extraction, although born in the United States, was graduated with high honors from Dartmouth with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1908, and was Austin Teaching Fellow at Harvard for four years.. Later, he served as Professor of Genetics at the University of Illinois for ten years.
After leaving Illinois, Dr. Detlefsen came to the Wistar Institution of Anatomy of the University of Pennsylvania where he remained as Professor of Genetics until he became Associate Editor of Biological Abstracts, published at the University of Pennsylvania under the auspices of the Union of Biological Societies of America.
Dr. Detlefsen, who lives in Swarthmore, Pa., has specialized in the fields of genetics, heredity and evolution, is a member and officer of many scientific societies, and has published numerous monographs and papers. He is now a Fellow by courtesy at the University of Pennsylvania.
