The epidemic of fires of which, however, only one was serious, has kept the members of the village's volunteer fire department active during the past month. Early in the morning of February 21, a fire which broke out in the basement of Allen's drug store completely destroyed that establishment and for a time threatened the entire block. The flames broke through at one time into The College Book-store but were speedily extinguished there. Several merchants in the block suffered losses from smoke and water. The Allen Drug Company's loss was estimated at $60,000.
Fire broke out also during the night of March 11, in the Medical School Building, but due to the prompt and efficient action of night watchman Bond and the Hanover department was extinguished before great damage had been done. The estimate of the toss from this fire was placed at $1500.
Pollard's Diner, a lunch cart located on Lebanon Street, was the scene of the third fire. The Diner was completely destroyed within a few minutes, but again the Hanover department did excellent work, preventing the spread of the flames to the stable against which the lunch cart stood.
