The Athletic Council has rigidly tightened the eligibility rules for competitors in the various sports and lias redefined the conditions of awarding insignia as a result of the changes made in the by-laws at the recent meeting of the-council.
The old three-year rule for athletes has been changed to read, "No student shall be eligible to represent the College in intercollegiate competition except during the first eight semesters of his enrollment in college."
This will allow men leaving college for a semester for other than scholastic or disciplinary reasons to play in their eighth semester. It also prohibits athletes who fail to graduate with their class from playing in the semesters following their fourth year.
The new regulations also require that competitors on varsity teams must have "secured the number of hours required for enrollment in the sophomore class." Freshmen transferring will not be eligible for freshman teams and must be in attendance at Dartmouth for two semesters before playing on any team.
Men playing in contests outside of the Dartmouth schedule during the academic year will be required to get the permission of the council.
The most drastic change in the conditions of awarding insignia is in basketball. The straight "D" will only be given to the team for winning the championship of the league instead of the rule of this year which awarded the straight letter for first and second. The "BDB" can be won by playing in the equivalent of two full games, a change from the previous regulation which required a member to play four complete halves.
The council has finally set the insignia to be given the lacrosse team to be a five-inch white "D"with a three-inch white "LT" on a green sweater. The lacrosse insignia will be awarded next year to men who have played "the equivalent of one full game in certain games designated by the Athletic Council." The requirements for this year's awards have not as yet been decided.
Numerals for the freshman swimming team, which will be instituted for the first time next year, will be. awarded under the following conditions J "He must have won a first place or been a member of a winning relay team in one of several dual meets designated by the Athletic Council ; or won a first or second place, or been a member of the winning relay team in a meet involving three or more schools or colleges."
