Philip S. Marden has put forth a volume of essays entitled "Detours" which an editorial writer in the Boston Herald commends highly in a column review, giving quotations which whet the appetite for the entire menu. Marden pays his respects to Various modern fads, including free verse, the sophisticated novel, and the problem play.

The latest innovation in the educational field is a new university department known as professorship of books. Rollins College at Winter Park, Fla., has created such a department, and Edwin Osgood Grover, author, editor, and publisher, has been appointed to fill the chair, beginning with the college year in September. A unique classroom is contemplated which will be devoid of desks and other customary appurtenances of the schoolroom. These will be replaced by a fireplace and lounge chairs. Class work will be largely free discussion by the students under the guidance of Professor

Grover. There will be lecture courses on the history of books and book-making and literary personalities; but the major courses will be reading courses in English and American literature.
