M. A. Donohue and Company of New York City have published a little book of 124 pages "Spice for Speeches" by Hon. John Henry Bartlett '94, First Assistant Postmaster General. Mr. Bartlett in his introduction states that it was his thought in offering this book to the public "that it mighjt be helpful to public speakers, and possibly also to others as a source of amusement or conversation." He adds "It has been our purpose to select only the best and brightest wit, having a good point to illustrate, and being proper in every presence. We have intended no politics, no propaganda, no disrespect—only fun. If this volume but adds a few laughs to the world, it will have served its purpose." Some of these brief stories have their origin in real happenings and others are more or less fictitious.
