At the opening of Dartmouth House in London as the new headquarters of the EnglishSpeaking Union in England, the following letter was received from Lord Dartmouth who graciously permits the ALUMNI MAGAZINE to reprint it : Patshull, Wolverhampton. "Dear Sir, "I have to thank you for your kindly thought in sending me the account of the opening of "Dartmouth House."
"An event which is to me of the greatest interest.
"Since the House became my property, there have been three distinct phases: "Prewar, War, and Postwar.
"Prewar. 37 Charles Street was my London home. We occupied it many months in each year, and it has for us many pleasant memories of family gatherings and the entertainment of our friends.
"War. When the war broke out the clouds darkened and as the pressure of war became acute it was obvious that such a House would be more usefully employed as a Hospital than as a private residence. It was offered to the Red Cross Society, accepted by them and admirably run by Lady Lytton. lam sure that among the patients there are. many who remember with grateful hearts the kindly administrations of Lady Lytton and her very efficient staff of Doctors and Nurses.
"Postwar. The war came to an end. The Family was scattered. The doors of the hospital were closed. The boards of the House Agents were up. And so it remained till, like the Phoenix rising from its ashes, its doors are again opened as the domicile of the English Speaking Union in London with a brilliant future before it, and so it forms the third link between my family and the U. S. A.
"Just 37 Charles Street in my day, Now Dartmouth House, and I am glad to think Between Great Britain and the U. S. A. The name of Dartmouth still will form a link.
"The first link, to which you have referred, the union between "Honest Will Legge" (the Father of the first. Lord Dartmouth) and Elizabeth Washington, and the consequent quartering of the bars and mullets of the Washingons on the coat of arms of the Legges.
"The second link, when another Lord Dartmouth gave his name to a great American College, a link that I am glad to think is ever lengthening and ever strengthening.
"And now the third link of 'Dartmouth House' a link I would like to confirm (if that is what is done "to links) by becoming a full member of the Union with the use of Dartmouth House, and I shall be obliged if you will kindly let me knoj§| how to do it.
"(Signed) Dartmouth
