The granddaughter of President Nathan Lord of Dartmouth, Sarah Appleton Lord Kneeland, wife of the Rev. Dr. Martin D. Kneeland, died at her home in Boston January 22.
She was born in 1854 in Montpelier, Vt., the daughter of the Rev. William and Harriet Aiken Lord, and she graduated from Holyoke College in the class of 1874. She was a former president of the Daughters of Vermont and was active all her life in religious, social, and missionary projects. Her husband and four children survive her.
Her grandfather, President Nathan Lord, was president of Dartmouth from 1828 to 1863, holding that position for 35 years, the second longest occupancy in the history of the College, its length being only surpassed by that of John Wheelock who was president from 1779 to 1815, a total of 36 years. Nathan Lord was the sixth president of the College.
