Announcement was made from the President's office recently of the award of the Morrill Allen Gallagher Memorial Scholarships to Charles Laurence Hardy '27, of Arlington, Mass., and Robert Nichols Stevens '27 of Somerville, Mass. These scholarships awarded annually to two undergraduates selected on the basis of the Rhodes Scholarships are the highest and most prized of such awards given by the College.
The Morrill Allen Gallagher Scholarships are based on a gift made by Mrs. Kate M. Morse of Boston. The qualifications on which the awards are based are qualities of manhood, force of character, and leadership; literary and scholastic ability and attainments; and physical vigor, as shown by participation in outdoor sports or in other ways. "Excellence in all three qualities is desired" according to the terms of the award, "but in the absence of this combination preference is given to the man who shows distinction either of character and personality, or of intellect, over one who shows a lower degree of excellence in both." Proficiency and interest in athletic pursuits are essential qualifications for the recipients of these scholarships but exceptional athletic distinction is not considered of equal importance with the other requirements. Preference is given to students from Boston and the vicinity.
Hardy has been a member of the football and hockey teams for three years and captain of the latter during the last season. He belongs to the Arts, Sphinx, the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was a member of the Green Key. Stevens has been playing varsity baseball since his sophomore year. He is a member of the Sphinx executive committee of the senior class, Sigma Chi fraternity and also was a member of the Green Key.
