Harvard 54 1/4 Dartmouth 33—Cornell 2854In Big Meet
In the annual indoor triangular meet held in Mechanics Hall, Boston, February 26, the Harvard track team scored a notable victory over the. Dartmouth and Cornell teams, winning eight of the 13 events contested. Dartmouth's team which earlier in the season had been heralded to win this meet made a disappointing showing, owing perhaps to the handicaps imposed by coach Hillman's long illness and the loss of several good performers because of scholastic difficulties.
Triangular meet records were broken in the pole vault, shot put, and freshman relay race, and the marks for the 40 yard dash, 45 yard hurdle race, and relay race were equalled. The Dartmouth freshman relay team clipped four fifths of a second from the old record in winning their event and Mason, of Harvard equalled the 40 yard dash record of the meet with his running time of 4 4-5 seconds. Wells of Dartmouth, running the 45 yard high hurdle race in 6 seconds equalled the meet record, and W. B. Smith, of Dartmouth and Burbank, of Harvard, tied in moving the pole-vault mark to 12 feet 7 3-4 inches.
McCall, captain of the Dartmouth team and one of its most dependable performers, was lost to the Green when he pulled a tendon after winning his heat in the 40 yard dash. This eliminated him from the final in that event as well as from the 300 yard race and the' relay. In the varsity relay race three of Dartmouth's four runners fell down and the Hanover team consequently trailed throughout. Ketz scored a second place for Dartmouth in the broad jumping event, Swope took third place in the 600 yard race, and Keith finished in second place in the mile run.
Dartmouth in Fifth Place
Dartmouth track men fought an uphill battle throughout the annual indoor intercollegiate championship meeting in New York March 5 to capture fifth place among the colleges and universities competing. The meeting was one of the closest ever held and was only decided by the last event. But ten points separated Harvard's winning team from the team which took sixth place. The Green team points were scored by Wells, who won the 70 yard hurdle race, Maynard, who captured the high jump, and Herrmann who tied for third place in the high jump. The Dartmouth relay team also scored points, taking third place in their event. Wells' time for the hurdle race was 9 seconds, a time which he had been expected considerably to better. In the high jump Maynard leaped over the bar at 6 feet 1-2 inch.
Due to an error in the scoring Dartmouth was originally announced as having taken sixth place. After revision eliminating the error the team standings were somewhat changed, Dartmouth being moved up to fifth place and Yale receiving second place instead of Cornell.
The points scored by the leaders were: Harvard 23 3-7, Yale 20K, Cornell 19 1-7, Penn State 19, Dartmouth 15 3-7, and Pennsylvania 14 3-7. The strange fractional scores resulted from a seven man tie for fifth place in the pole vault.
