One night not long ago a fellow asked Kip Orr to get a book down off a topshelf in the Doubleday bookstore, Pennsylvania Terminal. The eager salesman climbed up to get the book, whereupon the fellow soaked him on the head with a blackjack. But the Dartmouth granite athwart the Orr cerebral chamber did not give, and far from dropping cold Kip gave a lusty shout—which caused the slugger to run. A three-inch gash in his head and a new suit to replace his bloodstained garments are the only visible signs of the fracas. It was the theory of six Gotham detectives that something in Kip's past life lay back of the blow. The cash register was close by, and there were several hundreds in it. Which theory would J. S.
