Rcport of the Alumni Fund Committee

GEORGE M. MORRIS 'll

In reporting on the work for the year Mr. Morris stated that a special effort had been made to obtain responses from men who had contributed to the Fund in previous years but whose contributions had lapsed. Of the 1400 men thus solicited 405 replied, or 28 per cent, a response indicating the desirability of continuing this plan of preliminary campaign. On June 17 comparative figures showed a larger number of contributors than ever before, totaling 3,958, with an average gift of $21.00, slightly less than the average last year, and a total of contributions to date of slightly more than $83,000. The chairman of the committee reported that it was still uncertain whether the quota would be reached but that the prospects were favorable and that in any event it would be very close to $115,000. Mr. Morris also referred to the gratifying results of the work in California where a personal canvass was made of all men living in the state. By an early approach and a careful follow-up every man in the section has either contributed or pledged and there is every prospect that California will be represented 100 per cent when the final report is published.

Following the report it was Voted: That there be applied to the William Jewett Tucker Fellowship for the year ending June 30, 1927, $l,OOO. That the balance be appropriated to apply on current expenses of the College and as an addition to the permanent endowment fund in such proportion as the Fund Committee may approve after the final figures for the year, both for the Fund and the College, are available.

It was likewise Voted: That Sidney C. Hay ward '26 be named Executive Secretary of the Fund for the year 1927-28.

It was further Voted: That the Council express its appreciation of the effective work of Robert C. Strong '24 who retires as Executive Secretary of the Fund.

Report from the Athletic Council HARRY R. HENEAGE 'O7

Reporting for the Athletic Council Mr. Heneage presented a tabulated statement of the receipts and disbursements in the various sports and of the results of the season's activities in each department. Two teams were rated as champions—the gym team and the basketball team, and the freshman basketball team was likewise undefeated throughout the season. Mr. Heneage outlined the policy of the Council in taking over the responsibility for the recreational activities and also in building up a surplus fund for future necessities.

The Secretary also reported that acknowledgment had been received from the Athletic Council of the resolutions passed at the fall meeting of the Alumni Council relative to conduct at football games. Pending further consideration of the recommendation the Athletic Council stated its readiness to treat each case reported to it in such manner as circumstances appear to justify.

Constitutional Amendments

The president then called the attention of the Council to amendments to the constitution which had been discussed at the fall meeting and referred again to the members of the Council after further consideration by the Executive Committee. These amendments were printed in the Alumni Magazine according to constitutional provision one month previous to action by the Alumni Association. The changes contained a provision for obtaining the consent of a nominee before his name went on the ballot and a further provision that at least five nominating votes be deemed necessary to constitute a nomination. Arrangement was made for the presentation of these amendments at the meeting of the Alumni Association on the following Monday.

Report from the Outing Club

As the alumni member of the Outing Club Council Mr. Chandler told of the progress of the year both in activities and material advancement. One new cabin, making the fifteenth in the chain, was completed and dedicated at Commencement time, the gift of J. W. Newton 'B6. This cabin is located on a piece of land given to the College by Mr. Newton on the Newton farm, a short distance west of Norwich. The financial report showed the Club in a sound position and the activities ably conducted by a group of enthusiastic undergraduates.

Report of the Committee on the SelectiveProcess

The chairman of this committee, Mr. McDavitt, presented a report on the work of the year showing the progress that had been made in effectiveness since the Council had undertaken the responsibility for the interviewing of applicants in 1924. A series of questions sent to the members of the Council asking them to review the work of the year had brought many constructive suggestions and these reports were summarized briefly.

One of the difficulties in any system depending upon answers to the same questions submitted by a large number of committees or individuals is to find a common denominator for interpretation or understanding of the question itself. The Council in past years has discussed the desirability of a guide book of instruction upon which committees might depend in interviewing candidates. With this thought in mind Mr. O'Connor was asked to serve as chairman of a committee to consider the desirability of preparing a guide for interviewers and with the power to submit to the Council such a guide if his committee finds the preparation of it to be desirable. Mr. McDavitt reported that he had obtained the consent of Mr. O'Connor to serve as chairman of such a committee and suggested that he be given authority to appoint the other members himself either from the Council membership or from outside as might seem most desirable.

The consideration of this report was made particularly valuable through the presence of Dean Bill at the meeting who explained many of the features of the Selective Process and was able to resolve difficulties that had been in the minds of some of the councilors. In concluding, Mr. McDavitt recommended that the committee be continued with power to confer with Dean Bill and modify blank No. 6 used in the Council reports on applicants and also the procedure having to do with this blank provided this seemed desirable as a result of the discussions in this meeting and in such conferences as might be held. It was also recommended that the Council ratify the appointment of Mr. O'Connor as chairman of the committee to consider the preparation of a guide for interviewers with authority to prepare and submit such a guide. Following the discussion on the report it was

Voted: That the report be accepted and the recommendations of the committee adopted.

DINNER SESSION

The meeting then adjourned to gather again at College Hall as the guests of the College at dinner. The members of the Council were fortunate in the presence of President Hopkins who found the time in the busiest season of the year to meet with them and discuss the state of the College. Rather than make a formal address he expressed the willingness to answer questions that might be in the minds of any members of the Council and told of the development plans for the future with the building program of a new library, a natural science building, and new dormitories ; the budget prospects of the immediate succeeding years; the faculty situation; and the viewpoint of the present undergraduates. As usual this meeting with the president formed the high spot in the Council program.

SATURDAY MORNING SESSION

Assembling again on Saturday morning in Wentworth Hall the Secretary presented a letter from F. P. Cleaves 'B7 suggesting the use of an alumni seal and enclosing a concrete suggestion, the seal bearing a picture of the Old Pine with the words "Communis Matris Filii Fratres." Mr. Cleaves stated that his proposal did not contemplate any confusion with the official college seal and that it would be available, if approved, for any alumni desiring it at no profit to the originators. After discussion it was

Voted: That the proposal regarding an alumni seal made by F. P. Cleaves 'B7 be referred to the Committee on Alumni Projects with power to act following further reference to the Executive Committee.

Dartmouth Educational Association

Mr. McDavitt presented a letter from Robert J. Holmes 'O9 showing the financial standing of the Association and stating that membership had been brought to the desired number as a result of the campaign for new members conducted in the winter. Mr. Holmes also expressed his gratification at the assistance given him by members of the Council in the collection of several notes long overdue. The secretary was asked to communicate with Mr. Holmes expressing the appreciation of the Council for the very valuable work he has been doing through the Educational Association.

The call for the meeting had contained the suggestion that a session of introspection be held to consider the work of the Council, both as regards the accomplishments of the past and the possibilities for the future. Considerable discussion was provoked by this suggestion but the only definite vote resulting had to do with the changing conditions in centres of alumni population since the constitution of the Council was originally drafted. It was finally

Voted: That the Executive Committee study the question of re-districting for Council membership and report at a future meeting of the Council. Fall Meeting It was then Voted: that the fall meeting of the Council be held in Boston on October 21 and 22. The meeting then adjourned.
