ASSOCIATION of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
May 1929 C. G. Milham

With A. L. Priddy '15 and Bishop Walter T. Sumner '9B as guests of honor and chief speakers, and with an attendance of sixty-five, the annual meeting of the Southern California Association, held Tuesday evening, March 19, at the University Club in Los Angeles, proved one of the most notable gatherings of the year for the association in spite of the lack of a visitor direct from Hanover.

Its only drawback, and one that created a very real consternation, came in the surprise announcement from the retiring president, E. W. Hiestand 'lO, that he had just effected a new business connection in Cincinnati and was leaving for that city the following morning. There had been no intimation that such a move was being considered and the unexpected disclosure caused the group to be too stunned to do more than tell "Eck" that they did not see how they were very well going to get along without him. "Eck" had been a member of the Southern California Association for seven years and had been looked upon as one of its most forceful factors during all that time. During the last three years he has been a member of the Alumni Council representing the Coast. His administration as president of the Southern California group has been remarkably successful. A rising vote of thanks on this score had just been given him when the disclosure came that the annual meeting constituted his swan song. It is trite to say that what is Southern California's loss is Cincinnati's gain, and yet that is definitely true. The group here congratulates Cincinnati—and the entire East, for that matter.

Fortunately, the revelation that congratulations would have to be extended to Cincinnati did not come until the tail-end of the evening, so that it did not interfere with the festivities that mark an annual meeting out here. As usual, E. D. Martin '09 acted as musical director, and T. T. Redington '07 officiated at the piano, and the old songs were sung with a gusto that rolled back the years for everybody. Ed Martin also showed his versatility by presiding at the projector for the showing of the news reel from College, a showing that caused all present to register renewed appreciation for this latest effort to keep alumni informed of what is going on in Hanover and environs.

There was much news about the College in the talk given by Al Priddy. It had to do chiefly with the activities of the Alumni Council, which meant, of course, that there was opportunity to get a new insight into Dartmouth affairs, Bishop Sumner's address fitted in well with the talk given by Al. Some figures he gave concerning separations at other colleges, which probably it would be unwise to quote in print, brought out more remarkably the excellence of the record that has been achieved at Dartmouth under the selective process. Bishop Sumner also provided the highlights of the evening's entertainment by showing a few tricks at the piano. As the phrase goes, they brought down the house.

Eight past presidents of the association, David E. Bradley '03, It. B. Merrill '08, George P. Laton, '06, Professor Frank P. Brackett '87, J. Leland Richardson '08, James J. Norton "08, C. G. Milham '06, V. R. Salinger '00, were named as a nominating committee and with Merrill as chairman recommended the following slate: President, Walter B. Gibson '11; first vice-president, Ray L. Bennett '13; second vice-president Roland Foss '19; third vice-president, Walter Wilson '10; secretary-treasurer, Leon Rothschild '24; first assistant secretary, L. B. McFadden '26; second assistant, James W. McCleery '25; executive committee, E. W. Hiestand, Ashton Castle '24 and Albert Shiels, Jr. '17. These officers for the year 1929-30 were unanimously elected, another appointee to take Hiestand's place later.

Those present in addition to those already named included the following: E. A. Abbott '99, Edwin 0. Adams '94, Professor Walter S. Adams '98, A. H Ayers '06, Gerald C. Barnes '11, George S.
