With two Pow Wows to the credit of Chicago, both of which were too far away for most Pacific Coast alumni to attend, the men on the West Coast plan this summer to sponsor the third Dartmouth Pow Wow. For many years there has been much talk over small and scattered Dartmouth camp fires in the West about a meeting for the entire Coast, and this summer Dartmouth braves and squaws, three thousand miles to the west, will meet around a council fire at Wawona, Cal., to make whoopee from August 31 to September 2.
As far as is known, this will be the first meeting of any size to be staged on the West Coast by alumni of an Eastern college at a time other than an intersectional football game. To be sure, the Pacific Coast Pow Wow is planned as an "athletic holiday," but one where every one, athlete or not, will participate in the fun. Plans are already under way among the northern California alumni to lick the Los Angeles crowd in golf, tennis, swimming, riding, mountain-climbing, bridge, chess, dominoes, and moustachegrowing. Both sides plan to buy out the men from the Northwest, and will welcome alumni from the East who are good at any of these sports. Wawona was chosen for the roundup after a conference of Sachem Elmer Robinson '14, Secretary Able Winslow '20, Program Chairman George Stoddard '18, and Bill Washburn '14. Bill recommended Wawona because it is up in the heart of California's big trees, on the edge of Yosemite, and because he knows the manager of the hotel well enough to beat him down on the rates. It is easily accessible by road and air. By the highway it takes seven hours from San Francisco. For those who are air-minded, there is a licensed landing-field large enough for the veriest amateur, even in the midst of the redwoods. Travelers by rail can transfer to stages at a near-by junction.
No one could desire a more ideal location for an out-door Pow Wow than Wawona Hotel. Every facility for sports is there. For years Wawona lias been headquarters for hunters and fishermen in the high Sierras. Food for the hotel is grown upon its own farm near by. Accommodations are excellent, yet Pow Wow guests will enjoy special rates. Wawona lies 4000 feet high, in the midst of rugged mountains, with lakes and streams, and the brilliant colors of the West on every side.
The Pacific Coast Pow Wow offers a definite objective for Dartmouth alumni who would like to visit California this summer. Its location on the brink of Yosemite provides an abundance of scenic beauty. The occasion will assure the renewal of college acquaintances with men who in many cases have never attended a reunion. George Stoddard at 61 Beale St., San Francisco, will be glad to send more detailed information to anyone who will write for it.
