Announcement of the award of the Morrill Allen Gallagher Memorial Scholarships to Gabriel Bromberg '31, of New Britain, Conn., and William Francis Steck '81, of Cleveland, Ohio, was made this month by President Hopkins. These two scholarships, awarded to outstanding upperclassmen on the basis of the same qualifications as are required in the selection of Rhodes Scholars, are the most prized of such awards made by the College.
The Gallagher scholarships, of $600 each, are based on a gift of $25,000 made by Mrs. Kate M. Morse of Boston. They are awarded annually to two undergraduates selected for "qualities of manhood, force of character, and leadership"; "literary and scholastic ability and attainments"; and "physical vigor, as shown by participation in outdoor sports or in other ways." ,
Excellence in all three qualities is desired according to the terms of the award, "but in the absence of this combination preference will be given to the man who shows distinction either of character and personality, or of intellect, over one who shows a lower degree of excellence in both. Proficiency and interest in athletic pursuits are essential qualifications for the recipients of these scholarships but exceptional athletic distinction is not considered of equal importance with the other requirements."
Bromberg has received varsity letters in football and track, and is now one of Dartmouth's outstanding contenders for national honors as veteran guard on the football team. His scholastic average for his first three years is 2.53. He is a member of Pi Lambda Phi, Green Key and Sphinx. He prepared at the New Britain High School.
Steck has a scholastic average of 3.19 through junior year. He is manager of freshman basketball, head of the D. 0. C. forestry department, a member of the Interfraternity Council and chairman of the Palaeopitus committee on hums and rallies. He is a member of Phi Kappa Psi, Cabin and Trail, Green Key, Dragon and Palaeopitus. He prepared at the Shaker Heights High School.
