The governor of Colorado recently commandeered the services of W. W. Grant, Jr., and placed him as chairman of the committee to investigate the penitentiary riot at Denver. This public service proved interesting to "Billy," and occupied some five weeks of constant effort. "Billy" reports the finding of several college men among the inmates of the prison, but, as he is the sole representative of '03 in the state, the class may rest easy.
At the stockholders' meeting of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company on February 18, Victor M. Cutter, president of the United Fruit Company, was elected to the executive committee.
Lester Williams is professor of education at the University of California, and travels about the state a good deal inspecting high schools. His position is one of considerable standing in the educational department of the University.
"Herb" Follett is still in business in San Francisco as the western manager for Butler Brothers, and has charge of all their activities in the West. He is reported as living in Burlingame, Cal. Is the latter correct, "Herb?"
"Prexy" and Martha Whelden journeyed to Washington, D. C., on February 21, and were entertained at the home of Maurice and Evelyn Avery. Our hard working "Prexy" led the Boston agents of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company in qualifying for attendance at its annual convention held at this time in Washington. Congratulations, "Prexie," and may your success ever increase.
William H. Woolverton of Birmingham, Ala., whose presence at the 25th reunion was a contributing factor in the success of the event, was recently made a 33d degree Mason at Washington, the headquarters of the Southern Jurisdiction.
The '03 wives made it possible for their husbands to attend the alumni dinner by gathering for a little dinner of their own at Nan's Kitchen on the evening of March 1. After the repast they attended the play "A Little Accident" at the Plymouth Theatre. A delightful party was reported when they returned to the Statler Hotel to see that their husbands returned home promptly. Seriously, much of friendship has ripened among the ladies of '03 by such gatherings as the summer house parties of the past, instituted by Frances Mahoney, the family party after the Harvard game, and the alumni dinner party. Keep it up, girls, and enlarge the circle. The following ladies were present: Charlotte Kenerson, Sue Hanlon, Jane Howard, Amy Smith, Edith Watson, Martha Whelden, Winifred Hall, Florence Mudge, Helen Brown, Mary Swan, Edith Burbeck.
While we are talking about the alumni dinner, it seems that Preston W. Howard of Brockton, Mass., a member of the Old Guard and known by rank and file as "Pip," was so anxious to attend the Boston Alumni Association dinner this year that on January 20 he had his secretary "putting in calls" to find out just when the dinner was to be held anyway. It is understood that the executive committee of the Association got wind of Pip's anxiety, and set the date far enough ahead to suit him. At any rate "Pip" attended the dinner and his 100% attendance record is secure.
Horace Kidger of the Newton High School faculty has received a letter of commendation from the mayor of the city for his "anti-bumming-ride campaign." This campaign is an effort to put an end to the practice of begging automobile rides by high school students.
"Clayt" Erwin, deputy commissioner of education of the state of Vermont, is reported as working earnestly in standardizing the schools of the state. His latest success came at Cuttingsville, where after three years' effort the goal was reached, and quite a celebration made of the event by the town.
A fine letter from Tim Lyman was recently received by your Secretary. Tim is practising medicine in Sacramento, Cal., with a distinct and successful effort in general surgery. He seems most happy in portrayal of his married life, his vacations in the Sierra Nevada Mts., and his professional work.
