The Secretaries Association
JUNE 1930

The twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association was held in Hanover, May 2 and 3. Secretaries to the number of eighty-six representing the Dartmouth classes and alumni clubs and associations throughout the country were present for the two-day sessions of the Association. They were entertained at the Inn as guests of the College during their stay in Hanover.

President and Mrs. Hopkins received the secretaries at the President's house upon their arrival. Following this informal reception the first business meeting was held in the faculty room in Parkhurst Hall at 5:30 p.m. Adjournment was made at 7:00 p.m. for the annual dinner at the Inn. A second business session was held Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon was left free for the secretaries to visit Carpenter Hall and the Sanborn English House, the new Tuck School group and for them to attend the baseball or lacrosse games, or to play golf on Hilton Field. Dinner was served the secretaries at the Outing Club house in the evening and following this the latest movie release by "Dartmouth College News," the film service sponsored by the Secretaries Association, was shown. A block of seats especially reserved for the performance of "Robin Hood," presented by the Handel Society of Hanover, was occupied by the members of the Association later in the evening in Webster Hall.

THE ANNUAL DINNER

The annual dinner at the Inn has become the outstanding feature of the week-end when the secretaries return to the College to take part in discussions concerning ways by which they may improve their work with classes and alumni clubs and to hear from speakers of the latest developments in Hanover and to see these during their stay in town. President Hopkins spoke at the dinner session Friday evening, taking as his subject "Dartmouth." The high type of educational and inspirational address which the President gave fully maintained the standard of speaking which alumni have come to look for from him. H. B. Thayer '79, member of the board of trustees, gave a graphic and highly interesting description of "The College Plant." He treated his subject from the point of view of the past, of the present developments in the physical plant of the College and of those which are contemplated for the future. Mr. Thayer is chairman of the trustee committee on the development and maintenance of the physical plant. Nelson A. Rockefeller, member of the senior class, spoke on "Undergraduates." Mr. Rockefeller has been during the year one of the five Senior Fellows. He told an interesting story of what use a Senior Fellow makes of his privileges, using his own experience during the year as the basis for his talk.

The business sessions were concerned with a variety of subjects which were brought before the meeting through talks by various members of the Association or guest speakers and were then opened to discussion. The program began with the welcome to new secretaries by Nathaniel G. Burleigh '11, president of the Secretaries Association. He spoke of the secretaries who had passed away during the year. These were Eugene F. Clark '01, Roger S. Greene '59, William M. Hatch '86, Charles A. Perkins '90 and John Crowell '03. Mr. Burleigh welcomed the new secretaries to the Association. These were Sidney C. Hayward '26, Leslie P. Snow '86, Willis MeDuffee '90, Warren C. Kendall '99, Edward K. Burbeck '03, Robert J. Holmes '09, James C. Davis '19, C. Jerry Spaulding '24 and Albert I. Dickerson '30.

REPORT ON ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Following the appointment of nominating and resolutions committees a report on the ALUMNI MAGAZINE was given by Sidney C. Hayward '26, one of the editors, and Albert W. Frey '20, business manager of the MAGAZINE. They reported that the board of editors recommend no change in policy for the coming year and the financial report showed the MAGAZINE to be in a sound position.

The report of the executive committee, given by Mr. Burleigh, was concerned principally with an ideal constitution which had been drawn up and which it was voted should be recommended to the senior class each year for adoption. This constitution is reprinted elsewhere in this issue of the MAGAZINE.

A paper prepared by Herrick Brown '21 on "How to Hold a Class Together During the First Five Years" was read by Orton H. Hicks '21 in Mr. Brown's absence. Discussion following the paper and the contents of this report provided the members of the Association with valuable information on the subject.

ALUMNI FUND REPORT

Frederic H. Leggett '98, chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee, spoke on the position of the Fund in the present campaign. The Fund is far behind the position which it occupied at this time in either of the two previous campaigns but Mr. Leggett said that he was not inclined to take a pessimistic view of the situation but that he believed the alumni will come to the support of the Fund in large numbers previous to the end of the campaign, June 30, and that the drive will again be successful.

James R. Chandler '98, who retires this year as a representative of the Alumni Council from the Secretaries Association, spoke on the subject "The Alumni Council." He outlined the accomplishments of the Council during the past year and gave a summary of what the Council has on its program for the coming year. "Athletics and the College" was presented by Professor Ralph D. Beetle '06, member of the Athletic Council. "The Dartmouth Educational Loan Association" was described by Robert J. Holmes '09, treasurer of the Loan Association. He summarized the work which has been done by this corporation during the past year and gave a report of its present financial position.

John R. Burleigh '14 spoke to the secretaries on "The Boston Pow Wow" and outlined briefly the plans of the Boston Alumni Association for arranging a Pow Wow to come at the time of the Stanford-Dartmouth football game in Boston in the fall of 1931. Miss Charlotte E. Ford, Alumni Recorder of the College, made a valuable contribution to the program of the meetings in a paper, "What the Alumni Office Can Do for the Secretaries."

A brief report on "Dartmouth College News" movie service was given by Sidney C. Hayward '26 and it was voted that the subscription fee for three sets of movies for the year 1930-31 be made $20, a reduction of $5 over the present subscription. This report showed that many alumni clubs, as well as individual alumni, are taking advantage of the film service.

RESOLUTIONS

Mr. Burleigh called for a report from the resolutions committee, composed of Natt W. Emerson '00, chairman, Arthur M. Strong '92 and Warde Wilkins '13. The following resolutions were adopted by the secretaries;

Resolved: That the Secretaries Association express its sense of irreparable loss in the death of Eugene Francis Clark. Of Dartmouth by birth, education and affiliation, he was a part of its very life blood. From him, the Master Secretary of all Dartmouth classes, we of the brotherhood will gain inspiration for years to come and an ideal of service worthy of the noblest tradition of the College.

Resolved: That the Secretaries Association express its gratitude to the College for its generous hospitality and in so doing renew its oath of allegiance to all that Dartmouth College means to its sons.

Resolved: That the Secretaries Association express its sense of deep loss for four of its members who will no longer summon their classmates to action—Roger S. Greene '59, William M. Hatch '86, Charles A. Perkins '90 and John Crowell '03, loyal brothers of many years standing, your cares and your deeds have ended.

Resolved: That the Secretaries Association express to Edward Tuck, that great lover and benefactor of Dartmouth College, its gratitude for his continual generosity. Words of Dartmouth men are inadequate to express their real appreciation of his devotion.

As the final item of business on the program the nominating committee, composed of Frederick Chase '05, chairman, Henry Melville '79 and Allan Cate '20, reported and the following officers for next year were elected upon its recommendation: President....
